NEW ALBANY — A southern Indiana man has been arrested on preliminary charges alleging that he battered a 7-month-old girl, leaving her with a serious head injury.
Thirty-three-year-old Benjamin P. Smith of New Albany was arrested Tuesday on preliminary felony charges of battery and neglect of a dependent. He's being held on a $150,000 surety bond at the Floyd County Jail, pending a Friday initial hearing.
The Courier-Journal of Louisville, Ky., reports the child was taken Monday to a Louisville hospital after her mother found she had been injured at the family's home.
Hospital staff diagnosed that the infant had suffered a closed head injury and contacted police.
Police have reported that the child remains hospitalized in stable condition.
