INDIANAPOLIS — The wake for a longtime TV horror movie host drew hundreds of fans to an Indianapolis funeral home.

The Indianapolis Star reports people lined up outside the funeral home on the city's south side Friday to pay their respects to Bob Carter, who played the ghoulish Sammy Terry for more than 25 years on WTTV-TV's late-night movie show, "Nightmare Theater." The 83-year-old Carter, who also operated a music store, died Sunday.

For years, Carter, clad in a scarlet robe with his face painted to resemble a skull, would rise from a creaking coffin to tell horrific jokes as his fake spider sidekick, George, dangled at his side.

Carter is survived by his wife, Phyllis, four children, 14 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. The funeral and burial will be private.
