Indianapolis boy critically injured in dog-mauling

INDIANAPOLIS — Indianapolis police say a 12-year-old boy has been critically injured in a dog attack several people tried to stop before a neighbor fatally shot the canine.

Lt. Chris Bailey says the boy was bitten several times Friday afternoon when he was mauled by a dog that belonged to his mother's boyfriend.

WTHR-TV reports police say the man was trying place the pit bull into a crate outside a home when it rushed at the boy, biting him on his arms, legs and buttocks.

The Indianapolis Star reports that the boy was listed in critical condition at Riley Hospital for Children.

Police say several people joined in to stop the mauling. One neighbor tried to stab the animal before another neighbor shot the dog several times, killing it.
