Saturday, July 06, 2013 12:01 am
The Fort Wayne TinCaps (4-11) used two five-run innings and two homers and six RBIs by Rodney Daal to finally beat South Bend 16-10 and defeat their in-state rivals for just the 2nd time in 13 games this season and break a five-game losing skid Friday night.Daal clubbed two homers for the home team (47-37), a three-run homer in the sixth and a two-run shot in the eighth, to thrill a crowd of 7,401.

Fort Wayne (47-37) scored a run in the second as did South Bend, but added five in the third inning when Mallex Smith walked, Maxx Tissenbaum singled, Diego Goris singled to drive in Smith, Chris Burke doubled to knock in two, Corey Adamson singled for a run and Daal singled in the fifth run off starter Jesse Darrah, who took the loss after going three innings and giving up six runs.

The TinCaps added three more in the fourth off J.R. Bradley when Smith singled, stole his 29th base of the season and Tissenbaum singled him home. Adamson later tripled to drive two more in.

Fidel Pena had eight RBIs for South Bend in the game, and his triple brought in three in the Silver Hawks' sixth.

But Fort Wayne also was busy in its half of the sixth with Daal's three-run homer coming after Luis Tejada's RBI single and Diego Goris' RBI single.

But South Bend used a grand slam by Pena to close the gap to 14-9 in the seventh.

In the eighth, South Bend got another run to make it 14-10, and left the bases loaded before Daal went deep again with a man on to boost the lead to 16-10.

Matthew Shepherd went four and 2/3 innings for the TinCaps. Trevor Gott earned the victory in relief for Fort Wayne, going one and one-third scoreless innings. Chris Nunn got his eighth save when he fanned Alex Glenn and got Ruiz to fly out with the bases loaded in the top of the eighth.

South Bend (54-31) (10-6) leaves Fort Wayne with Great Lakes facing the TinCaps at 7:05 p.m. Saturday.FRIDAY'S BOX SCORE
