Fort Wayne will now have six NBA teams sending players

Monday, July 15, 2013 - 3:56 pm

The Mad Ants are going to be hard-pressed to get all of their NBA affiliates' logos on their uniforms this season.

As one of three NBA Development League teams not tied to one NBA franchise, the Ants will be an affiliate of six NBA teams: Charlotte Bobcats, Detroit Pistons, Indiana Pacers, Memphis Grizzlies, Milwaukee Bucks and Orlando Magic.

The Grizzlies and Magic are new affiliates for the Mad Ants.

Coincidentally, coach Duane Ticknor left the Ants last week to become an assistant coach with the Grizzlies.

An affiliation means any of the six NBA teams can assign younger players (or older rehabbing players) to the Mad Ants to get more playing time and development. The Pacers used the Ants last season with Orlando Johnson and Miles Plumlee. The Bucks assigned Doron Lamb and the Pistons assigned Khris Middleton and Kim English.

The other D-League teams with multiple affiliations are the Bakersfield Jam and Iowa Energy.

“We're excited that nearly half of the NBA has now acquired an exclusive NBA D-League affiliation, which demonstrates how important the NBA D-League has become for player, coach, and staff development," D-League president Dan Reed said in a released statement. "Once again we look forward to providing an effective 'farm system' benefiting all 30 NBA teams, current NBA players at all stages of their careers, and top NBA prospects aspiring to achieve their NBA dreams."
