Deputy Mayor Mark Becker named new CEO of Greater Fort Wayne Inc.

Friday, July 19, 2013 - 3:57 pm

Fort Wayne Deputy Mayor Mark Becker has been named CEO of the recently formed Greater Fort Wayne Inc.

Becker has served as deputy mayor of Fort Wayne Inc. since early 2012, as well as in an earlier administration. He's worked in economic- and community-development roles much of his career.

Speaking to about 40 people gathered Friday at the Grand Wayne Center to hear the announcement of his new job, Becker said he is "all in" the effort to achieve Greater Fort Wayne's ambitious goals. The goal of Greater Fort Wayne, as described in the news release announcing Becker's new role, is "to gain recognition of the greater Fort Wayne area as a top 10 city in the Midwest and, ultimately, one of the nation's top 100 cities." Fort Wayne was the United States' 74th-largest city, ranked by population, in 2012.

Allen County Commissioner Nelson Peters, who was a member of Greater Fort Wayne's search committee that looked for a CEO, said more than 200 candidates expressed an interest in the job. That pool was narrowed to 12 candidates, and four candidates were interviewed in person.

In Fort Wayne, Becker has held executive and senior management positions in economic and business development for private and public organizations including the Northern Indiana Public Service Company (NIPSCO), the Northeast Indiana Fund, the City's Division of Community Development and the Greater Fort Wayne Chamber of Commerce. Elsewhere, he held similar positions for the Greater Greenville Chamber of Commerce in South Carolina, the Logansport Economic Development Foundation, and the Logansport/Cass County Planning Department.

Becker holds a bachelor's degree in Urban Planning from the University of Cincinnati and has served on the board of directors for numerous community organizations.
