Former Indiana Tech coach brings vast experience

Friday, July 19, 2013 - 12:01 am

Longtime area basketball coach Gary Cobb has been named the new girls coach at Woodlan High School.

Cobb started his coaching career in 1981 and later became the head coach of the Indiana Tech women's team for 15 years and the head coach at New Haven High School for five seasons, ending in 2012. He also coached the New Haven boys team for three seasons before taking over the girls team.

"I think it will work out really well,'' Cobb said. "They have a good tradition of girls basketball there and have kids who really want to play and get better. I think the team that is going to be there next year fits right into that category.''

Cobb has a 301-242 career record. He replaces Tonya Burns-Cohrs who recently stepped aside after 13 years with the Warriors, going 113-163.

The Warriors were 12-8 last season.

"When I sat out a year, I realized how much I missed it,'' Cobb said. "That's what I do, and I wasn't ready to give it up yet.''
