Inspired by book on socially responsible big businesses

Saturday, July 27, 2013 - 12:01 am

Editor's note: This week's reader interview is with Gilda Chan, senior merchandise planner at Vera Bradley.

“I have been reading 'Conscious Capitalism,' by John Mackey. I am so inspired by how the business industry is evolving now. Businesses like Starbucks, Wal-Mart, Amazon — they are not just for profit. They are being responsible socially. They are not there just to make a profit; they also want to influence the community.

“The book is mostly about big business, and how it is helping others. An example: Whole Foods started small, and, as it grew larger, its first customers couldn't keep up with it. So Whole Foods said, 'We'll help you.' And they did, even giving money. Reading about it makes me supportive of their business. I know that what I'm spending at the end of the day will be helping other people. I used to live in Chicago and always went to Whole Foods. This is a great book.

“Currently, I am reading 'What on Earth Am I Here For?' It's by Rick Warren and is his second book. The first is 'The Purpose Driven Life.' This book gives guidance on how you can make use of your time. We try to find what our purpose in life is, so we try different things. The book says to use your time more aligned with your purpose. If you're not happy, this can guide you.

“I think I would place 'Conscious Capitalism' at the top of my list of good reading — by far. It's not just the writing; the intent of the book is very good.”
