One man is dead after a crash early Saturday morning resulted in a vehicle going into the Maumee River.
The incident took place at around 12:26 a.m., according to the Fort Wayne Police Department. Officers were dispatched to the intersection of Coombs and Herbert streets to investigate a reported accident with personal injury.
When officers arrived witnesses told them that a vehicle traveling north on Coombs went out of control on a bridge, struck it, and then went into the river.
Members of the police department's dive team found a man in the river. He was unresponsive and taken to a local hospital, where he was declared dead, according to the news release. The man's identity had not been released as of press time; an autopsy will be conducted by the Allen County Coroner's Office, which will determine the cause of death.
The release added that investigators believe there was only one person in the vehicle when it went into the river but acknowledged the possibility that someone else could have been.
The crash remains under investigation.
