Recently two of my grandchildren were at my house and we decided to go to one of the New Haven parks for the afternoon. When my own children were growing up they “lived” at New Haven Park, and I always raved about the fun the parks provided. Now that I have grandchildren I had not taken full advantage of the parks.

Oh, sure, we all have been to Jury Pool for fun days and several of my grandsons have taken part in the camps, but apparently I had forgotten everything the parks offered.

We arrived at Schnelker Park with our packed lunch, but the kids didn’t want to waste time eating lunch. Instead they made crafts, they played ball and shuffleboard with other kids, they took part in wet Wednesday by squirting water from water bottles, and — oh, yes — played on some play equipment.

There were three “helpers” who supervised the crafts and made certain that everyone was having fun.

In short, the grandkids had a blast. It was music to this gram’s ears to hear them tell me how much fun they had and how they wanted to go back the next day. This fun cost about $3 for the various crafts; everything else was free.

Ah, today at the park sure brought back some good memories.

Thanks New Haven Park Department for a wonderful day.
