Fort Wayne edges Lake County 4-3

Wednesday, July 31, 2013 06:11 pm
The Fort Wayne TinCaps snapped their five-game losing skid with a 4-3 victory over the Lake County Captains on Wednesday at Parkview Field. The TinCaps (56-50, 13-24) scored all four of their runs in the seventh inning.

Lake County (18-20, 41-64) starter Ryan Merritt threw three scoreless innings to begin the game. Luis Morel took over pitching duties for Lake County in the fourth, and he gave up no runs until the seventh.

Fort Wayne starting pitcher Zac Elfin was equally impressive early, giving up no runs until the top of the sixth inning. He began the frame with a strikeout, but then walked Logan Vick. Vick stole second base, and then with two outs, Richard Stock singled Vick home to put Lake County up 1-0. Two more Captains' singles gave them a 2-0 lead.

Reuben Meija came on to pitch the seventh inning for Fort Wayne, and he gave up a leadoff homer to Jorge Martinez to make the score 3-0.

But the seventh inning was just what the TinCaps needed. After Tyler Stubblefield grounded out, Rodney Daal singled. After a second out, Brian Adams doubled Daal home to cut the lead to 3-1. Mallex Smith then doubled Adams home, before stealing third base (his 44th steal of the season).

Alberth Martinez then joined the doubles parade with a two-base hit to tie the game at 3. Diego Goris then singled to give the TinCaps the lead 4-3.

Meija would get credit for the win with his one inning of work. Also shining in the bullpen for Fort Wayne were Chris Nunn, who came on with two outs in the eighth and one man on base, and he walked one but got the inning's final out.

The lefty stayed on the ninth for the TinCaps. After a leadoff walk, Nunn got the next two batters, but with the potential tying run at third base and two outs, manager Jose Valentin brought on right-hander Trevor Gott, and he fanned Eric Haase to end the game and earn the save before 4,601 fans.
