The Fort Wayne Civic Theatre has far exceeded expectations with its current production of “Les Mis.” We attended with friends on Aug. 2, and all we could do was to look at each other in amazement, wondering if this was really happening. We had all seen “Les Mis” either in New York or Chicago, and it would be trite to say the Civic’s production was equal to or better — and since triteness usually works, I’ll say it: The Civic’s production is as good as any professional production of this magnificent musical — anywhere!
It was as if every person on stage had graduated from college with a musical theater major. The voices were beyond belief — not only were the male and female leads excellent actors with a physical stature that met the demands of each role, but their voices soared with perfection.
There was not a weak link in this chain of theatrical joy. From Robert Shoquist’s imaginative sets to Eunice Wadewitz’s command of the music, it was truly a work of art come alive on the Civic stage. Under the deft direction of Greg Stieber, the cast, crew and orchestra blew us away. At curtain call, the audience immediately leapt to its feet with one accord in total awe and appreciation. Huzzah!
Kudos also to Phillip Colglazier, executive director, for starting off the new season with such a gift to our city.
Sincerely and with joyful tears still in my eyes,
Nancy Carlson Dodd
