Pressed by increasing demand for medical airlifts, Lutheran Hospital is adding a second helicopter for its critical-care air transport operation this fall.
The second helicopter will be based in Wabash, about 35 miles southwest of Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne.
Hospital officials planned to mark the expansion with a ceremonial groundbreaking this afternoon for Lutheran Air II's hangar at the Wabash Municipal Airport.
Lutheran officials say that adding the second helicopter will require about 10 new jobs, including pilots, mechanics and medical-crew members.
These jobs will be created even before the second helicopter, an EC135, arrives in October.
Officials note that even though the helicopter is best known for transporting accident and burn patients, it also is used to quickly move patients who need advanced cardiac care.
