Hoosiers positioned for 2014 commitments

Saturday, August 24, 2013 - 1:59 am

Tom Crean didn't start landing top-10 basketball recruiting classes because of luck. The Indiana coach knows how to maximize opportunities and he's taking advantage of it this weekend, with a lot of help from former standout guard Victor Oladipo.

Oladipo, a rookie with the NBA's Orlando Magic, is in Bloomington to help Crean with his ProCamp. So is another former Hoosier standout in D.J. White, who has played with three NBA teams, most recently the Boston Celtics.

Both will be highly visible as a number of high-profile recruits visit IU this weekend. Oladipo will be particularly impressive given he arrived in Bloomington as an unheralded guard and left three year's later as the No. 2 pick in the NBA Draft.

Those recruits include James Blackmon, the standout Class of 2014 guard who created a recruiting shock wave earlier this month when he de-committed from IU after three years, although he said the Hoosiers remain No. 1 on his list. He's ranked No. 33 nationally by Rivals.com, a national Internet recruiting service.

Also set to visit are New York shooting guard Isaiah Whitehead (rated No. 17 in the Class of 2014), Virginia guard Robert Johnson (No. 84 in the Class of 2014) and New Jersey shooting guard Malachi Richardson (No. 19 in the Class of 2015).

Johnson plays for AAU coach Boo Williams, who is the uncle of current Indiana freshman Troy Williams.

Also, highly regarded Indianapolis North Central forward Kris Wilkes, part of the Class of 2017 visited Friday night and reportedly was offered a scholarship. That continues Crean's preference to offer young players early.

In addition, Indianapolis Lawrence Central guard Kyle Guy, highly regarded in the Class of 2016, visited Thursday night.

The Hoosiers do not have any commitments for the Class of 2014.
