Letters to the Editor: Try understanding Bible, not discrediting it

Tuesday, September 10, 2013 - 12:01 am

Some people love to discredit the Bible, to argue against its authenticity and authority and to deny its value to modern man. Apparently, that is much easier than taking the Bible seriously and trying to do what it says. A Pharisee asked Jesus what Torah was all about. Jesus answered it was about two things: love the Lord your God with all you’ve got and love your neighbor as yourself (Matt. 22:37-40). St. John reminded us that this is the commandment we have from above, that he who loves God must love his brother also (1 John 4:21). St. Paul wrote that love is a greater gift and goal than faith and hope. Without despising these, we need to make love our aim (1 Cor. 13:1-14:1).

I only wish those who want to argue about he Bible would spend more time trying to understand what it says and devote more energy to love than to contention.
