Foundation awards grants for literacy

The Dollar General Literacy Foundation awarded $3,000 in grants to support youth literacy programs at the Fort Wayne Urban League.

Citilink offers senior program

AARP Allen County and Citilink have partnered to offer public transportation to seniors. Citilink will provide free day passes to the first 80 seniors who register 9:30-11 a.m. Oct. 1.

The event includes a bus ride to the downtown Central Station. There will be a tour and orientation to learn how to ride buses, make transfers and read route maps, purchase tickets and senior discounts. Each registered guest will receive a free day pass to ride buses the rest of the day. Registration: 1-877-926-8300.

SPCA offers same-day adoptions

Allen County SPCA offers same-day adoptions for pre-approved applications this weekend during PetSmart Charities National Adoption Weekend. Adoption hours are noon-4 p.m. Friday and Saturday and noon-2 p.m. Sunday at all Fort Wayne PetSmart locations. For information about fees and guidelines, visit or call 744-0454.

Annual Blue Tie Day will be Friday

To increase awareness about men's cancers, Cancer Services of Northeast Indiana encourages all local men and businesses to participate in Blue Tie Day and wear blue ties to the office Friday. Individual and group photos may be emailed to lbewley@cancer-serv Photos will be submitted for publication and posted on its blog.

The group with the most people in blue ties will receive blue “count moments” bracelets for their entire team.

CANI offers lunch program

Community Action of Northeast Indiana announced sponsorship of the Child and Adult Care Food Program, which provides free and reduced-price lunched at no separate charge to children in the Head Start preschool program.

In Allen County, sites include: Hanna-Creighton, 2107 S. Hanna St.; East Wayne Street Center, 825 Francis St.; Salvation Army, 2901 N. Clinton St.; Temple Achduth Vesholom, 5200 Old Mill Road; and St. Henry, 3029 E. Paulding Road.

In Noble County, sites include: First Presbyterian Church, 201 S. State St., Kendallville; and United Methodist Church, 466 Townline Road, Ligonier. The site in Whitley County is Columbia City Head Start, 1340 Governor's Road, Columbia City. Call 420-2833 for more information.

Disaster relief group to team with nonprofit

Associated Churches Active in Disaster (ACAD), the disaster ministry of Associated Churches of Fort Wayne and Allen County, announced it will coordinate disaster responses with Operation Blessing International, a nonprofit humanitarian organization based in Virginia.

Funds raised for breast cancer

The Moonshine Cowboys hosted a fundraiser and raised $3,500 for the Inflammatory Breast Cancer Network.
