Very soon after a man was shot dead near Lillie Street on Wednesday morning, police had a suspect in custody.
At 2:23 a.m., Fort Wayne Police were dispatched to a shooting reported in the 1300 block of Lillie Street. Officers found a man, later identified by the Allen County coroner's office as Joseph D. Conwell, 22, of Fort Wayne, in the north-south alley between Lillie and Winter streets with what appeared to be a gunshot wound or wounds. The coroner's office confirmed after an autopsy that Conwell died of at least one gunshot wound and declared his death the 31st homicide in Allen County in 2013.
Police found a man now charged with that shooting “almost immediately,” said Officer Michael Joyner, spokesman for the police department.
Police have spent longer trying to figure out what led to the shooting that landed William E. Martin, 38, in the Allen County Lock-up, preliminary charged with aggravated battery.
Joyner said investigators think there was a feud developed between Martin and Conwell, a feud that involved an episode of vandalism and a woman or girl.
Three Rivers Ambulance Authority paramedics took Conwell to a local hospital in critical condition, where a doctor declared him dead.
The Fort Wayne Fire Department assisted at the scene. Police, the coroner's office and the Allen County Prosecutor's Office continue their investigation of the death.
