Big time programs to visit Hinkle with frequency

Wednesday, September 18, 2013 - 5:52 pm

For the Butler men's basketball fans that needed something to resonate with them that their favorite college basketball program is now in the big time, perhaps the massive Big East Conference banner draped across the exterior of Hinkle Fieldhouse will be sufficient.

If they needed more, then a quick glance of the Bulldogs' 2013-14 schedule should do the trick.

Butler will play on either national or regional television 28 times this season, including a multitude of opportunities on the recently unveiled Fox Sports 1 network.

Over the past decade, the Butler schedule has been dotted with an occasional game against a nationally-prominent program, however, that level of team visiting Hinkle Fieldhouse is a rare occurrence.

Not anymore.

The Bulldogs will host programs such as Georgetown (Jan. 11), Marquette (Feb. 18), Creighton (Feb. 13) and Villanova (Dec. 31) from the NCAA Tournament, and Providence (Feb. 23) and St. John's (Jan. 25) from the NIT.

“Looking at our schedule, obviously there are many challenges ahead of us,” new Bulldog coach Brandon Miller said in a release. “We've always tried to put together a schedule that fits our current team, and I think that's what this year's schedule does.”

Even the non-Big East schedule will be appealing to Bulldog fans.

Butler will travel to Banker's Life Fieldhouse for the annual Crossroads Classic and face Purdue, which also could be an opponent in the Orlando-based Old Spice Classic event (Nov. 28-Dec. 1).

Long-standing rivals Ball State (Nov. 23), Xavier (Jan. 4), and Evansville will also provide road challenges for the Bulldogs, as will teams such as Vanderbilt (Nov. 19) and traditional Ivy League-power Princeton (Nov. 16).

As a new member of the Big East, just like Butler, Xavier will also visit Hinkle Fieldhouse on Feb. 11.

“We'll be tested in the non-conference,” Miller said. “And we'll certainly face a whole new set of challenges in the Big East.”

A unique day for basketball fans will take place on New Year's Eve, where the Big East will play five games on Fox Sports 1, beginning at noon with St. John's at Xavier. Butler will host Villanova at 7:30 p.m. in the fourth game of the day.

“What a great day for the Big East,” Miller said. ““To have a full day of Big East basketball on national television is a great way to start the conference schedule. It's a great day for Big East fans and a great day for basketball fans.”

Miller's team will face each Big East opponent twice during the regular season and the conference tournament will be played Mar. 12-15 at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Butler will have 15 games televised on Fox Sports 1, three games on Fox Sports 2 and three games on Fox Sports Networks. Additionally, the Bulldogs will have one game on CBS, two games on CBS Sports Network, three games on the ESPN family of networks and one game on the Big Ten Network in 2013-14.

The entire Big East Tournament will be televised on Fox Sports 1.
