FWPD officer in serious condition after crash in squad car

Friday, September 20, 2013 - 5:29 am

A Fort Wayne Police Department officer was in serious condition at a local hospital after he was found pinned inside his cruiser after a single-vehicle crash.

The incident took place at around 10:06 p.m. Thursday, according to a news release from the police department. Police dispatchers received multiple calls reporting that a squad car was involved in a crash; officers responded to the intersection of Wayne Trace and Oxford Street and found the crashed vehicle in the 3200 block of Wayne Trace.

The officer, identified as Michael McEachern, had to be extricated from the vehicle with assistance from the Fort Wayne Fire Department and members of Three Rivers Ambulance Authority. The squad car struck a small tree and pole on the west side of the road, and McEachern was taken to a local hospital in serious condition.

An initial investigation indicates the officer was driving south on Wayne Trace, responding to an emergency call, with the car’s emergency lights and siren activated, when he lost control of the vehicle and left the road. Investigators do not believe that alcohol or drugs were a contributing factor in the crash but do not know the reason the officer lost control of the vehicle.

The incident remains under investigation by the police department.
