Johnson is IU's first 2014 commitment

BLOOMINGTON – Once again Tom Crean and his Indiana basketball coaching staff have flexed their recruiting muscles, and showed they will be a factor in the Class of 2014 after all.

The Hoosiers landed a major commitment, their first for 2014 after the earlier de-commits by James Blackmon and Trey Lyles, when Virginia guard Robert Johnson picked them over North Carolina, Virginia and Florida State.

The 6-3 Johnson is rated the nation's No. 42 player by Rivals.com, a national Internet recruiting service. He's a combo guard with the ability to score from the perimeter as well as attack the rim. He can handle ball well enough to play point guard.

Johnson was not considered an elite recruit until this spring. Then he put together a series of strong travel ball showings. He was impressive during June's NBPA Top-100 camp, then followed that with high-scoring performances in July, most notably at the Peach Jam event.

Johnson is friends with another IU target in the Class of 2014, five-star forward Devin Robinson, who is also from Virginia. Robinson is rated as the No. 20 player in the class. Notre Dame, Florida, Oklahoma State and Connecticut also are in the running for Robinson.

The Hoosiers also are well positioned to get Massachusetts center Goodluck Okonoboh (No. 32 in the class) and Kansas point guard Lourawls “Tum-Tum” Nairn (No. 61). Blackmon, rated No. 23, also is still in the mix.
