Letter to the editor: Syria business is a Pandora's Box

Monday, September 23, 2013 - 12:01 am

I see now that the 50th anniversary of the Martin Luther King “I Have a Dream” speech has been celebrated with all due fanfare. We now have an open calendar.

And now the president wants the Congress to consider spending money (which in short, we do not have) on some kind of “limited commitment.” Short in duration, limited in scope. We are still operating under a cease-fire agreement in Korea.

When the crackpot in charge of North Korea says we are still at war, he’s actually correct. And where is the feeling of “moral obligation” in England? At NATO? Turkey has an air force, Saudi Arabia has war planes. And what about Israel? Where is the overwhelming chill of concern from China or Japan or South Korea? See who’s willing to underwrite any direct money costs?

My father drove a tank from France to Belgium and into Germany. My stepfather served as a Marine over a year in Korea. I spent the “year of rock-n-roll” (1966) in the jungle in Vietnam. My son spent 12 years on active duty in the submarine services.

Listen to Washington’s farewell address: Avoid foreign entanglements. This Syria business is a Pandora’s Box with a can of worms at the bottom.
