A Portage man was arrested Thursday afternoon in connection with a Fort Wayne rape that reportedly occurred in June.

Jared L. Smith, 28, of Portage, a member of the Indiana National Guard, was arrested at the Indiana National Guard Amory in Fort Wayne after a four-month criminal investigation by Indiana State Police, according to a news release.

Smith was arrested when ISP troopers served him with an Allen Superior Court arrest warrant alleging a felony charge of rape, according to the ISP release.

In June, ISP detective Clint Hetrick started an investigation after a 22-year-old Indianapolis woman, who was an acquaintance of Smith, reported that Smith had allegedly raped her at a Fort Wayne hotel. According to the news release the following occurred: Smith allegedly entered the woman's unlocked hotel room. He then allegedly climbed into her bed and had sex with her as she slept. He stopped and left after the women woke up.

The night of the alleged rape Smith was in Fort Wayne for a military obligation to the Guard, according to the release.

He was being held in the Allen County Jail in lieu of a $10,000 bond.
