Boilers open with a bang

Monday, September 30, 2013 12:01 am
WEST LAFAYETTE – Purdue was at full-throttle basketball force to open its official practice at state-of-the-art facility Cardinal Court.Saturday's three-hour practice featured the kind of physicality normally found at football games. It drew several former Boiler players, including Willie Merriweather, an Indianapolis standout from the late 1950s who once played against Oscar Robertson in high school. Merriweather is a new member of the Purdue Athletics Hall of Fame.

“It might have been the best first day of practice that we've had since I've been here,” coach Matt Painter said. He's entering his ninth season. “We have a lot to learn, but the guys really competed. They didn't go through the motions.”

The video shows that.

Official practice is starting earlier this season thanks to new NCAA rules that allow teams to have 30 practices in the 42 games leading up to the season opener.

Among the Boilers is former South Side standout Rapheal Davis, a 6-5 sophomore forward set to see major action. Also vying for a significant role is freshman guard Bryson Scott, a former Northrop standout.
