Did you ever come across self-righteous converts who became sincerely obnoxious in their compulsion to be models of goodness and teacher of those whose defects show? Or how about the self-righteous politicians, obsessed with radically transforming this evil, good-for-nothing country and remaking it into a multicultural and socialist paradise where justice is defined by those in power and those they actively affirm?
Political correctness is group think, the sources, ethos, and agenda that define a particular group. Details vary, but common to all group think is the self-righteousness that justifies imposing it on the uneducated, the unenlightened, the insensitive and other forms of lesser people. I faced groupthink in the church’s doctrine and indoctrination when young. But now, it has been politically secularized and sanctioned.
In sum, self-righteousness is more dangerous than any vice it could have overcome. When we get rid of demons, we have to be careful that we aren’t just opening up space and opportunity for them to return with others worse than themselves.
