Wayne New Tech teacher receives $25,000 Milken Award (VIDEO)

Thursday, October 3, 2013 - 10:49 am

A New Tech Academy at Wayne High School teacher got a big surprise today when run-of-the-mill school assembly turned into a presentation of a $25,000 national award.

Ginger Giessler received the Milken Educator Award from Indiana schools superintendent Glenda Ritz and Jane Foley, Milken's senior vice president.

"You give me the gift every day when you have successes," Giessler told the school body in video on Milken's website.

Giessler, a language arts teacher, was nominated for the award for “pushing the boundaries” at New Tech and “an impact through engaging students beyond the standard academic ideals of pass/fail,” according to a biography on Milken's website.

“Her students' literacy scores are 25% above the district average and student pass rates are at the school's highest levels with 75-80%,” the website said.
