Coventry 13 theaters stay open under new ownership

Thursday, October 3, 2013 - 1:55 pm

Fort Wayne's only remaining second-run theater remains open, but under new ownership.

Starplex Cinemas based in Dallas posted on its website this week, "Sadly the Fort Wayne Coventry 13 is CLOSED as of Tuesday, October 1, 2013."

But it never really was, thanks to new owners who fairly seamlessly took ownership and opened it Tuesday.

The landlords, JSMN International based out of New Jersey, who own the theater property, assumed ownership of the theaters under the name Apollo Coventry Cinemas LLC, said Chad Sirikonda of JSMN. The theater complex's name will remain Coventry 13, he said.

Matt Gebhard, first assistant manager at the theater, said the new owners worked out an arrangement with Starplex to keep most of the theater equipment.

Prices will remain the same at the theater, which shows movies that have been recently released but are not new. All movies are $3 except on Tuesdays, when they are $2. Concession prices will remain the same, Gebhard said.

One change in effect in a couple of weeks will be the addition of new software that will allow patrons to pay with credit cards at the theater, Gebhard said. The theater has accepted cash only up to this point.

Gebhard said he, General Manager Seth Bradtmueller and the new owners have talked about gradually adding digital projectors to the complex, although he didn't know exactly when. They're also kicking around the idea of hosting classic movie nights and renting out the theater for special events, such as movie outings for day care centers.

"We're going to try to stay level-headed," said Gebhard, noting they had new freedom now that the theater is not opened by a big theater corporation anymore.
