1 man dead, another injured in shootings Friday afternoon

Friday, October 4, 2013 - 9:30 pm

A man was killed Friday afternoon in a shooting at Baldwin Creek Apartments, 1920 Hobson Road, and Fort Wayne Police think they may have found a car used to get away from the shooting.

Detectives also have interviewed a second man who suffered a minor gunshot injury at about the same time to figure out whether that shooting is related to fatal attack.

Police were called to the apartment complex minutes after 2 p.m. on a report of a shooting. They found the victim, whose identity has not yet been released, lying near the sidewalk in front of the apartment building. He was taken to a local hospital in critical condition; when he arrived, a physician there said the victim was dead.

The early investigation indicates the shooting occurred inside one of the nearby apartment buildings, police reported later Friday. Detectives were working to determine whether the shooting occurred inside the apartment building hallway or a specific apartment. Police said several witnesses said that a possible suspect or suspects fled the scene in a black Dodge Charger. Officers located the Charger in a nearby neighborhood -- with no one inside it -- and crime scene technicians began examining it.

Hours after the shooting, police said detectives were interviewing potential witnesses and tenants of the nearby apartment buildings and businesses. Crime scene technicians are processing the scene and collecting evidence. The Allen County Coroner’s Office will release the victim’s identity along with the cause and manner of death.

While police were investigating this shooting, a second shooting victim arrived at the Parkview Hospital Randallia campus. It appears the second victim provided his own transportation to the hospital. The second victim had a very minor gunshot wound to the leg. He was treated by a physician and released from the hospital. Detectives interviewed the second victim in order to figure out whether the shootings were related.

Both incidents remain under investigation by the City of Fort Wayne Police Department, the Allen County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, and the Allen County Coroner’s Office. Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call the Fort Wayne Police Department at (260) 427-1222 or Crime Stoppers at (260) 436-7867.
