NEEDHAM — Authorities are blaming two young boys for starting a fire that burned part of a central Indiana cornfield.
The Johnson County Sheriff's Department says the fire was reported Sunday in a field near the community of Needham's fire station. WRTV reports police say the 9- and 10-year-old boys were playing with a lighter in the field and set a leaf on fire.
The flames spread and they ran to their homes after they couldn't put it out, but didn't tell their parents what happened or call to report the fire. Police say between a half-acre and an acre of corn was destroyed in the fire about 15 miles south of Indianapolis.
The boys could face juvenile charges of arson.
