SAC foes to battle in consecutive games

Monday, October 14, 2013 12:16 am
So what are the advantages and disadvantages of playing the same team in back-to-back games?Snider and Wayne are about to find out.

The two Summit Athletic Conference foes are already set to face off this Saturday night in the regular-season finale. They also found out Sunday evening during the 41st Annual IHSAA State Tournament draw they will play again Nov. 1 in the opening week of the Class 5A playoffs.

With its 34 teams, Class 5A will have its bye week in the playoffs in the opening week of the postseason.

Meanwhile, Class 6A and its 32 teams will have its bye in the week between its semistate and state championship matchups.

“You always learn a lot from the first time you play a team,” Snider coach Kurt Tippmann said. “You see some personnel you cannot see on film and the kids on both teams will get a feel for the scheme and speed.

“I don't think any one team gets a necessary advantage.”

It is not as if Wayne or Snider will go through the motions this upcoming Saturday and not show much in anticipation of their sectional rematch. The Panthers, ranked seventh in Class 5A, may be playing for an SAC championship depending on the North Side-Northrop result Friday.

“There are more implications that just a winner and a loser (this Saturday),” Tippmann said.

The Class 5A No. 11 Generals (6-2) will be out to continue their four-game winning streak and make more believers in the Wayne program. Coach Robert Brown's team has surrendered just 12 points during the winning streak, including a 45-6 rout of Class 4A No. 10 Bishop Dwenger.

“Some will say we caught Bishop Dwenger at the right time with them coming off a big win (at Cincinnati LaSalle),” Brown said. “I do understand that at Wayne, certain perceptions exist regardless of what we have done.

“The Wayne brand is something people are going to doubt.”

This week's game between the two programs may go a long way toward showing which one will have the advantage in the postseason, or it may completely mislead.

“People say it is tough to beat a team twice in the same season, but by the same token it is tough to lose to a team twice,” Brown said.

Wayne has a chance to make history, a fact that Brown will make sure his team is aware of. No team has beaten Snider, Bishop Dwenger and Bishop Luers in the same season since Harding in 2003, a team Brown was a member of.

“We want to be honest with the boys and know there will be extra incentive (Saturday),” Brown said. “To go against (Coach Tippmann) and his Snider team, we are fired up. It is a Saturday game and a lot of other schools will come to watch because it is the only game in town.

“I am not a fan of mind games, I deal in reality. We are not going to hide from playing Snider two games in a row, we will embrace it. We will play better and play harder over the next two games.”Class 6A
