Davis, Whelan less mediocre than Marini last week, gain ground

Thursday, October 17, 2013 - 6:48 pm

TOM DAVIS, News-Sentinel sports editor

Last week: 5-5

Overall: 56-24

Heritage over Garrett – Patriots have proved that they can be a solid program year in, year out.

South Adams over Southern Wells – Starfires are home and have history on their side.

Woodlan over Adams Central – Warriors in midst of best season in years.

East Noble over Bellmont – Knights are as good as any team in the area - when they choose to be.

New Haven over Homestead – I don't know what happened last week, but real Bulldogs show up Friday.

Norwell over Columbia City – Harnish leading Knights to victories (have you read that before?).

Churubusco over Lakeland – Eagles have history on their side, despite being on road.

Brebeuf Jesuit over Concordia Lutheran – Braves too tough, too tested for even solid Cadets.

Snider over Wayne – Don't underestimate the Generals, but balanced Panthers hitting stride.

South Side over Gary Lew Wallace – Archers will end regular season on upbeat note.

THE PIG, News-Sentinel football expert

Last week: 5-5

Overall: 52-28

Heritage over Garrett - Patriots win the first of back-to-back meetings between these teams.

Southern Wells over South Adams - Raiders make it two straight heading into the playoffs.

Woodlan over Adams Central - Warriors are a team to watch in Class 2A

East Noble over Bellmont - Knights have recovered well from loss to Norwell in Week 6.

New Haven over Homestead - No sharing of the NHC championship for the Bulldogs.

Norwell over Columbia City - With three straight wins, tough to pick against the Knights

right now.

Churubusco over Lakeland - Don't let The Pig down, Eagles!

Brebeuf Jesuit over Concordia Lutheran - This looked like a blowout on paper at beginning of season, not as much now.

Snider over Wayne - Panthers better guard against letdown after beating Bishop Dwenger.

South Side over Gary Lew Wallace - The Archers need some positive publicity, and they get some with a victory.

GLENN MARINI, WANE-TV sports director

Last week: 4-6

Overall: 57-23

Heritage over Garrett – Railroaders are tough to figure out; Patriots have been steady.

South Adams over Southern Wells – The Fightin' Yencers could prove me wrong in this one.

Woodlan over Adams Central – Both could have solid playoff runs, but Woodlan has more size.

East Noble over Bellmont – The Knights may be hitting their stride at the right time.

New Haven over Homestead – Spartans are a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma.

Norwell over Columbia City – After wins over East Noble and Homestead, the Knights are feeling their oats.

Churubusco over Lakeland – Eagles had weaknesses exposed last week, will improve.

Brebeuf Jesuit over Concordia Lutheran – Long trip, high talent level of opponent doesn't bode well for Cadets.

Snider over Wayne – Generals will make sure this isn't the blowout it has been in years past.

South Side over Gary Lew Wallace – Archers crushed the Hornets (75-6!) on the road last year.

JOE WHELAN, WANE-TV weekend sports anchor

Last week: 6-4

Overall: 55-25

Heritage over Garrett - The Patriots have a little too much firepower offensively.

South Adams over Southern Wells - The Starfires aren't dropping this one at home.

Woodlan over Adams Central - The Warriors ground game should take care of business.

East Noble over Bellmont - Expect the Knights to continue their roll after topping New Haven.

New Haven over Homestead - The Bulldogs know what's at stake - they take care of business.

Columbia City over Norwell - The Eagles win a tight one.

Churubusco over Lakeland - 'Busco should bounce back from last week's surprising loss.

Concordia Lutheran over Brebeuf Jesuit - The Cadets have been playing well lately.

Snider over Wayne - The Panthers close out the regular season with a win.

Gary Lew Wallace over South - The Archers have been too inconsistent this season.
