SOUTH BEND — Indiana's warm fall is drawing to a close, with the season's first freeze possible across much of the state.

The National Weather Service has issued a freeze watch for roughly the northern third of Indiana for Tuesday morning. The state's central third will be under a frost warning.

The weather service says a cold front moving across the state Monday could push low temperatures in parts of northern Indiana to 29 degrees early Tuesday. That could kill sensitive outdoor plants.

High temperatures have reached at least 60 degrees in South Bend for at 17 of October's first 20 days. But the weather service says Oct. 17 is the average first hard freeze for South Bend with temperatures falling to 28 degrees or below.
