Sophomore paces Hoosier victory

Sunday, October 27, 2013 - 12:01 am

BLOOMINGTON – Yogi Ferrell had never made more than three three-pointers in a college basketball game.

Until Saturday night.

Ferrell showcased an off-season heavy on outside shooting by going 6-for-10 from three-point range for 20 points in Indiana’s 83-68 exhibition victory over the University of Southern Indiana Saturday night.

Ferrell, who was 0-for-5 from inside the arc, had made just 23 three-pointers last season as a freshman. He spoke after the victory.

Assess IU's performance

"As a team, we played hard. We needed to step it up defensively in the second half. Our overall performance we played better than I expected. We were more together; we were talking to each other; we were getting each other through our mistakes."

On the six three-pointers

“It shows what I’ve done in the off-season shooting with Jeremy (Hollowell) Stan (Robinson), Evan (Gordon) and even Noah (Vonleh). We’re always shooting after practice. I will continue to do that.”

On Troy Williams, who had 10 points and 10 rebounds

“I felt he played with high energy. He’s very explosive. One of the things he does is he has an offensive presence. Had 10 rebounds. We’ll definitely need that. We’re going to need second-chance points."

On the way the team handled new rules limiting hand checking

“We had 12 fouls. The refs said we did a good job of not fouling. We were moving our feet and not using our hands. We’re adjusting to new rules. Having refs in practice helps.”
