Letter to the editor: Calling all alumni of Camp Ellen Logan for an 85-year reunion

Friday, November 1, 2013 - 12:01 am

As a girl growing up in the 1950s and ’60s, summer meant long days of playing outdoors, bike riding and watching girls softball at Packard Park. Our family might go to my aunt’s lake cottage or to visit grandparents. These were the days before organized girls’ sports or family sightseeing vacations.

The most important part of summer, the part that I would look forward to all winter, was returning to Girl Scout camp. For two wonderful weeks each summer, my sister and I would return to Camp Ella J. Logan on Dewert Lake. We would meet lifelong friends, swim, camp and grow in diversity, fair play, communication and practical skills that would serve us well in our adult years.

For many women today the words Girl Scout camp, Ella J. or Logan bring back memories that are hard to put into words.

Camp Ella J. Logan turns 85 this year — 85 years of providing year-round programming to generations of girls. The Girl Scouts of Northern Indiana-Michiana are celebrating with lunch, camp tours and a singalong 11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Nov. 9. All are welcome. The cost of $20 includes the day at camp, along with money going toward camp improvements. Reservations may be made by contacting Leslie at the Girl Scout office, 1-800-283-4812, Ext. 144.

So Logan is calling all of her alumni to meet again on a beautiful fall day to celebrate her 85 years by remembering her past and celebrating the future.
