COLUMBUS — Teachers at a Columbus charter school are scrambling to find work after financial problems forced the closure of their school.

The International School of Columbus closed Oct. 25 after its board failed to raise $250,000 needed to keep it open. Thirteen teachers and four staff members were left without paychecks.

Teacher Shawn Bentz tells The Republic he's been with the school since it opened in 2009. Now he's feeling a sense of urgency because he's been the sole income earner since his wife lost her job five years ago.

Bentz says he's applied at Lowe's, Walgreens and other businesses and won't be picky about a job.

Many say it's difficult to get a teaching job once the school year begins.

Ball State University owned the school's charter.
