Restaurant Notes: Wine tasting at Embassy; Scandinavian cuisine by IPFW students

Limited tickets available, and guests will receive glass.

The Embassy Theatre is hosting a wine-tasting featuring 12 wines not available in stores.

Winemaker Giuseppe Sala of Toscano Vineyards in Tuscany, Italy, will be at this first-ever Embassy wine-tasting to showcase his wine selection and discuss his vineyards and the wine-making process.

The event is 5:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Embassy Theatre lobby, 121 W. Jefferson Blvd. Patrons can sample hors d'oeuvres and buy the wines by the bottle or case at special prices. Each guest at the event, called Vintage, also will get a special wine glass. Tickets are $30 and attendance is limited. Purchase tickets at the Embassy box office or at www.ticketmaster.com.

Students serve up Scandinavian dishes

Traditional Scandinavian dishes are on the menu for this year's Tuesday night events at the Holiday Inn across from Memorial Coliseum when the hospitality management students at IPFW take over the restaurant in the hotel.

Seniors in the Advanced Foodservice Management course, under the guidance of John Niser, department head of the hospitality management program at IPFW, manage and operate the restaurant on Tuesdays now through Dec. 10. It's open to the public; hours are 5-10 p.m.

This group of students calls its restaurant Norse and describes it as a contemporary twist on Scandinavian cuisine. The students are responsible for all aspects of the restaurant, from menu design to finances.

The menu consists of traditional Scandinavian dishes customized to the Midwestern palate, according to an IPFW news release, which also said, “In essence, Norse's dishes are also a delightful mirror of Indiana's own comfort foods: dumplings, pastries, venison, potatoes, fresh salmon, meat cakes, and of course gluten free offerings for dessert.”

Reservations are encouraged; call the Holiday Inn at 482-3800. The hotel and restaurant are west of IPFW. A 15 percent discount is offered for IPFW students, faculty and staff.

Shoebox site

Chick-fil-A, 1725 Apple Glen Blvd., will be collecting shoeboxes filled with school supplies, hygiene items and toys for needy children overseas 4-7 p.m. Thursday. Those who donate will get a coupon for a free chicken sandwich.

Golf for veterans

The Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation Department invites veterans to enjoy breakfast and a round of golf for free on Veterans Day.

The veterans' breakfast is 8:30-10:30 a.m. Monday at the Community Center, 233 W. Main St. Breakfast will be served at 8:30 a.m. This breakfast is open to all veterans, but preregistration is required by Wednesday. Veterans should call 427-6460 to reserve their place. Entertainment will be provided by the American Legion Band and the Honor Flight of Northeast Indiana.

Shoaff, McMillen and Foster Park golf courses will remain open one extra day this year, on Monday, so veterans can play for free. Those currently active in the military may also play for free Monday. You will be asked to show your military ID when you arrive to play. McDonald's upgrades

The downtown McDonald’s is under new ownership. New owners Judy and Richard Littlefield plan about $200,000 in upgrades to the interior of the store, which had been corporate-owned. They have hired about 15 new employees.
