Letter to the editor: How about some help for us nonviolent offenders?

Wednesday, November 13, 2013 - 12:01 am

My name is Timothy Jester. I am a 33-year-old male. I’ve read in the papers and elsewhere for years about overpopulation in Indiana state prisons. I’ve also read in the papers and elsewhere for years about what the state is gonna do to try and decrease the population.

They have come up with an assortment of programs for different kinds of offenders from sex offenders to drinking and driving offenders to drug offenders.

I am currently incarcerated for HTV (habitual traffic violator). It is a Class C felony and carries two to eight years in prison. I never in my life have had a serious violent crime. This will not be the first time I will be sent to prison for driving a car.

Might I also mention that I never in my life had a driver’s license nor had the opportunity to obtain one? You would think that a program would be constructed for me and other individuals like me to get our license and be productive members of society and not overpopulate the prison system.

But because I wasn’t drinking and driving and putting other people’s lives in danger I don’t get a second- chance program as someone that was drinking and driving would get as an alternative to going to prison.

When will something be done to help us nonviolent offenders that aren’t drug abusers and drinkers?

Timothy L. Jester
