Man in critical condition after being found in underwear with severe burns

Friday, November 15, 2013 - 7:46 am

A man was in critical condition after being found by police officers with severe burns to his body, wearing only his underwear, while his burning clothes were found blocks away.

The incident took place around 2:45 p.m. Thursday, according to a news release from the Fort Wayne Police Department. Officers responded to the 3500 block of Winter Street to investigate a report of man down; officers found a man dressed only in his underwear who has sustained serious burn injuries, who also smelled of gasoline.

The man, whose identity has not been released, was transported to a local hospital, where he was determined to be in critical condition.

Witnesses assisted officers in retracing the man's path back to an address in the 3500 block of Lillie Street, where a pile of burning clothes -- believed to belong to the burned man -- were found. The news release said an area stretching from Lillie Street to Winter Street was cordoned off while investigators searched for evidence.

The police department is requesting that anyone who might have seen unusual activity in that area to contact Crime Stoppers at 436-7867 or the police department at 427-1222. The incident is being investigated by the police department, the Fort Wayne Fire Department, and the Allen County Prosecutor's Office.
