Texas hits technical foul free throw to seal the win

Saturday, November 23, 2013 12:01 am
FRISCO, Texas – An apparent scorekeeper's error led to a technical foul in the final second and a loss for the Mad Ants in their 2013-14 season opener.Mad Ants president Jeff Potter said the team will file a protest with the NBA Development League disputing the ending.

The Texas Legends beat the Mad Ants 100-99 on a free throw by Chris Douglas-Roberts with 0.9 seconds left Friday at the Dr Pepper Arena. Douglas-Roberts made the free throw after the Mad Ants were charged with a technical foul for calling timeout when they had no timeouts left.

The dispute centers on whether the Ants were erroneously charged with a timeout earlier when play stopped because of an injury to the face of Fort Wayne forward Ramon Harris.

The Ants (0-1) came back from a 12-point deficit in the fourth quarter to tie the game on a driving shot by Ron Howard with 17.5 seconds left. Texas ran the clock down looking for a game-winning shot, but missed and Olek Czyz pulled down the rebound for Fort Wayne.

It appeared that Fort Wayne called timeout with at least 2.4 seconds on the clock, but it was allowed to continue running to 0.2 seconds left, and then the officials reset it to 0.9 before the technical foul was called.

The teams meet again in the same arena at 8 tonight. The Mad Ants will then return home for their home opener next Friday.

Howard led the Ants with 19 points and Czyz recorded a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Chris Porter scored 14 points with nine rebounds. Texas was led by Douglas-Roberts with 21 points and Devin Ebanks with 20 points and 11 rebounds.Fort Wayne 20 31 19 29 — 99
