Restaurant news: Mix and match breakfast favorites at Cereal City

Self-serve shop offers 30 varieties of dry cereal and small, medium and large bowls

Here's a new twist on the popular self-serve frozen-yogurt shops: a cereal bar.

Carl Mosher and his son, Mark Mosher, opened Cereal City at 1533 W. Dupont Road on Black Friday, just in time for people to fuel up for their shopping sprees.

Cereal City offers 30 varieties of self-serve dry cereal, such as Trix, Froot Loops, Reese's Puffs, Honey Nut Cheerios and Life. The customer can combine several cereals in one bowl before proceeding to the toppings bar, where honey, chocolate syrup, sprinkles, candy toppings, marshmallows and more can be added. A splash of fat-free, 2 percent or lactose-free milk completes the bowl.

Cereal City also offers non-sweetened cereals, such as Cheerios and Wheaties, as well as oatmeal. Coffee and juice also are available, as well as a few doughnuts.

The cost per bowl is $2.49 for a small bowl, $3.49 for a medium bowl and $4.49 for a large bowl.

Carl Moser says he doesn't know of any other eateries offering a self-serve cereal and toppings concept. He and his son came up with the idea while trying to think up something to do with the leased space. The family owns three tanning salons but moved one out of the Dupont Road location. With two years left on the lease they didn't want the space to sit empty, so they decided, “let's turn this into a place we would like to go,” Carl Moser said.

In addition to tables, Cereal City has a couch and big-screen TV.

Hours are 6:30 a.m.-9 p.m. seven days a week, although Moser said they may back off the hours a bit on Sundays. Phone: 444-5647.

Old World Fudge

The fudge shop that used to be at Glenbrook Square — Old World Fudge — has moved to 533 W. Washington Blvd., where the old Charis House used to be. Partners Cris Lamb and Dusty Agler sell Mackinac Island-style fudge made on site. Lamb said they sell more than 100 flavors of fudge, although not every flavor every day. The store also sells taffy, gummy candy and other traditional candies. Hours: 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Friday and 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday.

Lamb said in about two weeks the location will be expanded into a cafe called The Boulevard and will be open 7 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday-Friday. The cafe will sell breakfast foods, such as biscuits and gravy, soups, and sandwiches. Phone: 609-1210.

Bagger Dave's

We have new information on Bagger Dave's, the restaurant and bar opening at 2886 E. Dupont Road. The “burger tavern,” as it calls itself, will celebrate with a grand opening at 11 a.m. Dec. 15.

New eatery in Leo Crossing

It's been a Chinese restaurant, a Mexican restaurant and most recently a Mediterranean restaurant, and now the eatery at 10368 Leo Road has reopened featuring American fare.

Joanna's Family Restaurant has taken the place of Hala Grill at 10368 Leo Road in Leo Crossing. The eatery features breakfast all day as well as burgers, sandwiches and pasta, said general manager Gene Hovis.

Joanna's is owned by Mauro Puga.

Tea and meditation

I discovered Tamurai Tea while out and about Friday. It's in White Swan Plaza but sits back from the road, so it's not easy to see. It's a tea shop, meditation room and educational center. Hours are 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Monday-Friday and 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday with meditation at 6:15 a.m. Monday and Wednesday or by appointment. Phone: 387-6134. Website: www.tamuraitea.com.

Ethiopian eatery

Queen of Sheba restaurant, 2805 E. State Blvd., has opened where Lemongrass used to be. Before that, it was an Ethiopian restaurant, so this is the second go-around for that cuisine at this location. Queen of Sheba serves Ethiopian and vegetarian food and has a vegetarian buffet weekdays. Tentatively hours are 11 a.m.-8 p.m. Tuesday-Sunday. It will be closed Mondays. Phone: 804-3111.

Holiday Tasting

Barr Street Cafe, the restaurant run by Fort Wayne Community Schools students at Anthis Career Center, is hosting a Holiday Tasting 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Dec. 10, 11, 12 and 13. Cost is $20 per person, payable by Friday. Reservations are required; call 467-1031 or 467-1030.

The class of 2014 is also selling a cookbook in CD, e-book or paper form that will include past favorite recipes. The cookbooks can be ordered now and will be available in February.

Free frozen yogurt for a year

Red Lobster redo

Red Lobster has remodeled its restaurant at 4825 Coldwater Road. The style is inspired by the New England coast. The new exterior features a stone tower, ship lanterns and Adirondack-style chairs.

Interior changes include expanded seating.

Changes have been made to the menu, too. The Bar Harbor Lobster and Crab Bake and Roasted Garlic Seafood Bake have been permanently added to the menu, along with a new item, the Portofino Seafood Bake.

In Fort Wayne Red Lobster is open daily at 11 a.m. for lunch and stays open until 10 p.m. Sunday-Thursday and until 11 p.m. Friday-Saturday.

Sad news

•Happy's Pizza, 204 E. Rudisill Blvd., is closed. The Happy's at the corner of State Boulevard and Hobson Road is still open.

•Downtown Grind Coffee House, 200 Pearl St., has closed.

New digs
