Komets Kare Package is coming up and Icing the Puck

Wednesday, December 4, 2013 - 2:56 am

After Komets coach Gary Graham called out his players by name a couple weeks ago he caught some grief from fans. Imagine if he had done what Toledo coach Nick Vitucci did to his players. Vitucci tried to break a rough patch by having his team come out after a 7-0 home loss for extra practice.

"There was no effort,'' Vitucci told the Toledo Blade. "We have to look long and hard at this hockey club right now. They failed to play tonight any part of 60 minutes so we're going back out there right now.''

Unfortunately for the Walleye, they were shut out in their next two games and are in the midst of 190 minutes, 30 seconds of being held scoreless. Toledo has lost seven of its last eight games.

Putting a team on the ice for extra skating has happened before in Fort Wayne but not for at least 25 years.

"I've never had to do this,'' Vitucci said. "Any one of a dozen people we could pull out of this lineup after tonight's game and not even have to think hard about it.''

Vitucci did make a point of complimenting the effort of former Komet Stephon Thorne.

Where's the beef?

Of the 11 players the Anaheim Ducks or Norfolk Admirals sent the Komets last year as part of their affiliation agreement, not one player is playing in the organization this year. Most of the players such as Nick Schaus, Gabe Guentzel, Corey Elkins, Luca Caputi and Ryan Lasch signed in Europe. Josh Brittain is with Hershey in the American Hockey League, and Ryan Hegarty plays with Greenville in the ECHL. Jeff Deslauriers is playing with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in the AHL.

Where are they now?

Here's how some of the former Komets are doing playing in other leagues this season.

In the Central Hockey League, Tristin Llewellyn leads all players in plus-minus at plus-15 and leads all defensemen with 16 points while playing for Rapid City. Garrett Klotz has 47 penalty minutes in 16 games with Allen. Brett Smith has four goals and seven points in 13 games with Brampton. Colton Hayes has 29 penalty minutes in 12 games with Missouri. Eric Giosa has six goals and 14 points in 16 games with Rapid City. Craig Cescon has 39 penalty minutes in 21 games with Tulsa.

In the Southern Professional Hockey League, Kevin Kaminski's Louisiana team leads the standings with an 11-3-1 record, Rod Aldof's Pensacola team is 9-6-1 and Brian Gratz's Bloomington 3-9-0. Dan McWhinney has a 2.01 goals against average and .939 save percentage for the Mississippi RiverKings. Leo Thomas has seven goals and 10 points in 14 games for Mississippi. Nick Wheeler has four goals and seven points in 14 games with Peoria. Dominic Osman has four goals and 11 points in 14 games with Huntsville. After re-signing with Pensacola, John Dunbar scored four goals in his first six games.
