The search for IPFW's next athletic director is ongoing, and a potential selection announcement has been pushed back until at least February. Originally, school officials hoped to have a replacement for Tommy Bell in place by Jan. 1.
Bell left earlier in the fall to become the athletic director at Western Illinois. He was replaced on an interim basis by women's volleyball coach Kelley Hartley-Hutton who is also a candidate for the full-time position.
IPFW officials say they have whittled the applicants down from 86 but are declining to say where the numbers currently are. The process is being pushed back because of illness on the selection committee, first-semester finals, the Christmas break and the upcoming NCAA convention.
Search Committee Director Dan Gebhart plans to announce by Friday the list of candidates who will come to campus to interview. Interviews will take place the weeks of Jan. 21 and Jan. 27. Gebhart is IPFW's comptroller and a former IPFW men's basketball captain, a one-time assistant athletic director at the school and an inductee in the IPFW Athletics Hall of Fame.
"We would like someone to start as soon as possible after the decision is made, but must keep in mind that some or all of the candidates may have commitments extending out a month or so beyond that,'' Gebhart said.
Members of the search committee include women's studies professor Janet Badia; faculty athletic representative Elliott Blumenthal; community member and booster Rick Evans; men's basketball coach Tony Jasick; senior women's administrator Christine Kuznar; community member and booster Larry Lee; accounting faculty member Cynthia Lloyd; office of institutional equity member Christine Marcuccilli; Indiana Purdue student government association representative Raija Ochola; women's soccer coach Margaret Saurin; baseball player Malcolm White; and Director of Athletic Compliance Wendy Wilson.
Bell had been at IPFW for six years before beginning his new position Aug. 12.
