City proposes moving Cindy's Diner to Community Center parking lot

Thursday, December 12, 2013 - 8:41 pm

The city of Fort Wayne has a proposal in place for a new location for Cindy's Diner, but the diner's owners didn't hear about it until Thursday afternoon.

Thursday afternoon, the board of Park Commissioners heard plans to move Cindy's Diner to West Berry Street and Maiden Lane in a portion of the parking lot of the Community Center, which is part of the Fort Wayne Parks & Recreation Department.

"I really didn't hear anything about that proposal until an hour" before the press release was distributed, said John Scheele, who owns Cindy's with his wife, Cindy Scheele. "I really haven't had enough time to look at it yet to make an intelligent decision about whether it's an acceptable proposal or not."

The park board is expected to vote on the proposal Jan. 9. If the move is approved and weather is favorable, the move for Cindy's Diner would likely occur in February, according to the city.

In September, a $71 million development in downtown that includes a new national headquarters for Ash Brokerage and a residential development led by Hanning & Bean Enterprises was announced.

Cindy's Diner is currently located in the project area. The new development would be bordered by Wayne, Harrison, Berry, and Webster streets and utilize nearly a full square block. Developers anticipate beginning construction in April 2014; it will take nearly two years to complete.
