Boilers Class of 2014 up to 15

Tuesday, December 17, 2013 - 3:24 am

Purdue big recruiting weekend benefits continue.

Lineman Martesse Patterson and defensive back Juan Jenkins committed to Purdue on Sunday. That gives the Boilers 15 overall commitments, four from the 16 who made official visits the weekend of Dec. 7.

That moved Purdue to No. 59 nationally among the Class of 2014 by Rivals.com, a national Internet recruiting service.

Patterson is a 6-3, 310-pound three-star prospect out of Ohio. He can play defensive tackle and offensive linemen, but projects as an offensive linemen for Purdue.

The Boilers beat out Illinois, Michigan State and Kentucky.

Jenkins is a three-star player out of Florida. He had also been considering Indiana, Georgia Tech, Utah and Central Florida.

Of Purdue's 15 commitments, eight are on defense. The most highly regarded is four-star defensive end Gelen Robinson from Lake Central High School in Indiana. He's rated as the state's No. 5 prospect, and the No. 13 defensive end nationally, by Rivals.com.

Robinson is the only four-star prospect among Purdue's commitments. It has seven three-star recruits.

The Boilers' class now ranks tied for ninth in the Big Ten with Illiinois.

Ohio State leads the Big Ten with the nation's No. 7 class. The Buckeyes are followed by Michigan (No. 18 nationally), Wisconsin (No. 20), Nebraska (No. 28), Penn State (No.30), Michigan State (No. 36), Iowa (No. 55) and Northwestern (No. 56).

The bottom two Big Ten classes are Minnesota (No. 64) and Indiana (No. 67).
