Fort Wayne Police continue New Year's shootings investigations

Thursday, January 2, 2014 - 9:12 am

The early Wednesday shooting death of a man is not being investigated as a criminal act, according to a spokesman for the Fort Wayne Police Department.

Officer Michael Joyner said Thursday that the death of the man, which took place at around 3:28 a.m. in the 3600 block of Logan Avenue, is currently being investigated as an accidental shooting, not a criminal act.

That person’s identity has not been released; that identification and cause of death is expected to come from the Allen County coroner’s office after an autopsy has been completed.

Joyner also provided more information about the triple shooting that took place at around midnight on New Year’s Eve.

Three male victims, ages 21, 19 and 17, were wounded in that incident, which took place in the 4800 block of Reed Street.

The people were at a New Year’s celebration and had stepped out onto a patio when shots rang out; the men were shot through a fence, Joyner said Thursday.

One of the shooting victims had been downgraded to critical condition from serious after being evaluated at a local hospital; that person has since been upgraded to serious, Joyner said. The other two victims remained in serious condition.

Joyner said police have no suspects or an apparent motive in the triple shooting.
