Freshman will be eligible in 2015

Monday, January 6, 2014 - 12:46 am

Luke Fischer is going home.

Sort of.

The former Indiana freshman center has decided to transfer to Marquette. That is in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Fischer was a Wisconsin Mr. Basketball from Germantown after leading his school to consecutive state titles and a 56-0 record.

The 6-10 Fischer tweeted on his Twitter account that he will enroll at Marquette, starting with the second semester. Because of transfer rules, he must sit out a year. He will be eligible starting with the second semester of 2015.

Fischer also considered UW-Milwaukee and Creighton.

“I am excited to say I will be transferring to Marquette University to play for Coach (Buzz) Williams and the Golden Eagles,” Fischer tweeted. “Marquette allows me to be closer to home while playing at the highest level for a great academic institution.”

Marquette is 9-6 this season as part of the new Big East Conference. It reached the Elite Eight last season. Coach Tom Crean coached at Marquette before moving to IU.

Fischer averaged 2.8 points and 2.1 rebounds in 13 non-conference games. In his final game for the Hoosiers, against Kennesaw State just before Christmas, he scored a career high 10 points, plus added three blocks.

He told Crean he was leaving the morning of Dec. 30, the day before the Hoosiers opened Big Ten play at Illinois. Homesickness was reportedly a major reason for his decision.
