Roads clear but icy; watch continues
A Winter Weather Travel Watch for Fort Wayne, Allen County, New Haven, and Woodburn has been extended. Officials will provide further updates when conditions warrant a change in travel status.
A watch means that conditions are threatening to the safety of the public. During a watch local travel advisory, only essential travel, such as to and from work or in emergency situations is recommended.
The majority of roads are now passable across northeast Indiana, according to the Indiana Department of Transportation. However, as it has stressed throughout this winter storm, even chemically treated road salt is less effective in these subzero temperatures, and snowpack that essentially equal sheets of ice should be expected on all roads, according to an INDOT news release. These conditions may get worse overnight when any thawing and melting that had occurred during the day refreezes. Icy conditions aren't expected to improve until later Wednesday, when temperatures are expected to become more favorable for salt and plows, according to the release.
