The impending storm brought the biggest sales day in history for Kroger stores in the Central Division, a company spokesman said Monday. And as the deep freeze moderates later Tuesday, customer traffic is likely to increase, and Wednesday may set a new record for sales, John Elliott of the company’s Central Division said.

Consumer traffic at the region’s Kroger stores wasn’t just the typical rush that precedes a storm. Shoppers behaved differently “when it became obvious that (the storm) was going to be a multi-day event,” Elliott explained. People who might be content to hunker down for a day and make do with what they had on hand weren’t as confident they could hunker down for three days, and more were moved to shop, he suggested.

The storm kept only a small fraction of Kroger stores in the Central Division from opening, Elliott said. Only six of the 136 stores in the division, which is mainly Indiana and Illinois, failed to open Monday. Three were kept shut by power outages; the rest didn't have the staffing to open.
