New Jersey athlete to enroll early with Irish

Monday, January 13, 2014 - 12:01 am

The News-Sentinel sports staff will feature a different verbally committed player for the four NCAA Division I football programs (Ball State, Indiana Notre Dame and Purdue) in Indiana leading up to National Signing Day on Feb. 5.

Here is today's Notre Dame featured commit:

ANDREW TRUMBETTI

Position: DE

Hometown: Demarest, New Jersey

Height: 6-foot-5

Weight: 249 pounds

Commitment date: March 23, 2013

Other scholarship offers: 14, including Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Michigan State and Stanford.

Ranking: Rated a three-star recruit by Rivals.com, the No. 12 player in New Jersey and the No. 19 weakside defensive end in the country; Rated a four-star recruit by Scout.com.

Notre Dame depth chart at position: Junior Sheldon Day, sophomore Isaac Rochell, senior Justin Utupo, senior Chase Hounshell.

Scouting report: Entering Notre Dame as an early-enrollee, Trumbetti is a perfect example of a player whose long-term position cannot be predicted at this point in the Fighting Irish's 3-4 defense. While Trumbetti is not large enough right now to man one of the pure defensive end positions, he may prove athletic and skilled enough to be an outside linebacker/defensive end hybrid when Notre Dame sneaks a fourth player down onto the line, similar to guys like Ishaq Williams. Notre Dame would like to preserve a year of eligibility with Trumbetti, but the depth uncertainty up front may complicate those hopes.
