Lineman selected Boilers over MAC programs

Thursday, January 16, 2014 - 11:10 am

The News-Sentinel sports staff will feature a different verbally committed player for the four NCAA Division I football programs (Ball State, Indiana Notre Dame and Purdue) in Indiana leading up to National Signing Day on Feb. 5.

Here is today's Purdue featured commit:

KIRK BARRON

Position: Center

Hometown: Mishawaka, Indiana

Height: 6-foot-2

Weight: 294 pounds

Commitment date: June 15, 2013

Other scholarship offers: Three, including Ball State, UMass and Ohio University.

Ranking: Rated a two-star recruit by Rivals.com and 15th best prospect in Indiana; rated as a three-star recruit by Scout.com.

Purdue depth chart at position: Redshirt junior-to-be Robert Kugler.

Scouting report: In a perfect world, programs would like to be in a position to allow the majority of their offensive line recruits to take a redshirt in their freshman season to give them a year to bulk up and transition their bodies and minds to the college game. However, Purdue coach Darrell Hazell may not be in that position with Barron. With just one center on the depth back next year in returning starter Kugler, Barron may step into the two-deep earlier than expected. As an early enrollee, Barron will get experience in spring practice that may be enough to get him into game action in 2014, unless Hazell decides to move some players along the offensive line to different positions.
