Quarterback could contend for starting role

Tuesday, January 14, 2014 12:01 am
The News-Sentinel sports staff will feature a different verbally committed player for the four NCAA Division I football programs (Ball State, Indiana Notre Dame and Purdue) in Indiana leading up to National Signing Day on Feb. 5.Here is today's Purdue featured commit:Position: Quarterback

High School: Creekview High School in Carrollton, Texas

Height: 6-foot-1

Weight: 187 pounds

Commitment date: September 13, 2013

Other scholarship offers: Memphis

Ranking: Rated a three-star recruit by Rivals.com, the No. 18 pro-style quarterback in the country and the No. 54 player in Texas; rated a three-star prospect by Scout.com.

Purdue depth chart at position: Sophomore Danny Etling, redshirt sophomore Austin Appleby.

Scouting report: Put simply, the Purdue offense was woeful this past season, which makes predicting next year's depth chart at any position on that side of the ball, particularly quarterback, a difficult proposition. Etling played serviceable when he took the starter's job toward the end of the year with 10 touchdowns and seven interceptions, but serviceable is not what the Boilermakers want. Blough is an early enrollee and will be with Purdue in spring practice, immersing himself in the college game quickly. The potential is there for Blough to emerge as a freshman starter, but the likely scenario is Etling starts, Appleby is the back-up and Coach Darrell Hazell tries to preserve a year of eligibility with who is likely to be Purdue's quarterback of the future.
